The U.S. objected to a U.N. resolution on Wednesday that demanded aid for Gaza-based Palestinians and denounced Hamas’s attacks on Israel and other acts of violence against civilians.
The United States voted against the resolution, and there were two abstentions in the Security Council of 15, which has 15 members. U.S. After the vote, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield criticized the resolution for failing to mention Israel’s right to self-defense and noted that President Joe Biden is now in the area conducting diplomacy.
Two Russian amendments, one asking for a “humanitarian cease-fire” and the other denouncing indiscriminate assaults on people and “civilian objects” in Gaza, such as hospitals and schools, were rejected by council members before the vote on the resolution proposed by Brazil.
