New York Times journalist Thomas Friedman interviewed Israeli journalist Moav Vardi of Israel television’s Kan news channel, discussing why he thinks the planned judicial reforms could sour relations between Israel and the US.
According to Friedman, Israel does not have a constitution like the US, which puts the country’s democratic structure in peril if the political elite manages to control the judiciary.
In 2015, after the prime minister addressed Congress, he was criticized for “interfering in American politics.” In contrast, he claimed, President Biden’s comments on the judicial reform were incredibly well-balanced and matched the opinions of Israeli president Herzog.
Friedman continued, “Should we sit like friendly children and do nothing as we send 3.3 billion dollars in aid to Israel?
After the journalist questioned why Israel had succeeded under the current system, the prime minister—investigated for several crimes—decided to curtail the court’s authority.
He asserted that Israel’s standing and support in the US have declined throughout Netanyahu’s office.
