U.K. Security Secretary Tom Tugendhat corroborated a Jewish Chronicle revelation from last week that the Iranian regime was “mapping” Jewish leaders in a speech he gave on Monday in Parliament.
Tugendhat said before the House of Commons that Iran tried to gather intelligence on Jews living in Israel and the United Kingdom between 2020 and 2022.
“We think that this information served as a practice run for more fatal operations,”
The minister brought up the Iranian scheme during a statement about Iranian threats affecting British journalists.
According to Tugendhat, just last week, officials detained a man who was subsequently charged with a terrorism-related violation close to the offices of an Iranian foreign media organization.
He also mentioned that since 2022, authorities had thwarted 15 credible Iranian attempts to assassinate or kidnap British citizens.
