According to a statement released by the UK cabinet office on Friday, King Charles III bestowed the knighthood, one of the country’s highest honors, on British Chief Rabbi Rav Ephraim Mirvis.
In the 2023 New Year Honors, Rabbi Mirvis was named Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his “major achievements to the Jewish community, to interfaith relations, and education,” according to the statement.
Mirvis responded to the news with, “I am incredibly honored and genuinely humbled by this prize.
Receiving this honor from His Majesty the King in his first year as our monarch will be very emotional.
In 2005, Queen Elizabeth II knighted Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, z’l, Rabbi Mirvis’ predecessor.
