United Airlines Gets a Handle on Canceled Flights

A respite in the inclement weather on Monday, together with lighter schedules the day before the Fourth of July vacation, allowed airlines to keep more flights on schedule.

Despite 1,000 flights being delayed, less than 100 U.S. flights had been canceled by late morning on the East Coast, according to FlightAware.

In order to improve, United Airlines, the U.S. airline with the poorest performance for more than a week, outlined a plan that included fewer flights at its hub airport in Newark, New Jersey.

In order to have extra buffer time, especially during thunderstorm season, CEO Scott Kirby stated over the weekend that United is negotiating with local authorities to add more gates to the airport.

However, the airline will need to scale down its schedule in Newark.

The Federal Aviation Administration, which last week lowered the number of flights into and out of Newark, is still largely to blame, according to Kirby.

As a result, United had to cancel several flights and leave the aircraft and crew stranded.

Since Thursday, around 2.7 million travelers per day have been passing through airport checkpoints, with 2.88 million passing through on Friday, the most ever noted by the Transportation Security Administration.

The Federal Aviation Administration anticipated around 36,500 flights on Monday and fewer than 32,000 flights on Tuesday.

Wednesday, when many holiday revelers will be returning home, saw a spike of almost 50,000 flights.
