To match the number of flights that China permits American airlines to fly between the two countries, the Biden administration will allow Chinese airlines to increase their service to the United States.
The Transportation Department announced that it would let Chinese airlines increase the number of weekly roundtrips between the United States and China from eight to twelve.
That is still a minimal number of flights compared to what was permitted before the pandemic between the two nations.
In a document on Wednesday, the Transportation Department stated that it was responding to China’s statement in late December that it would remove some limitations on international passenger flights.
Due to China’s decision, American Airlines increased the number of roundtrips between Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Shanghai by adding two new weekly flights in March.
In March, China declared to stimulate tourism and its economy. It was reopening its borders after a three-year hiatus. China has loosened visa requirements to enable more outbound group visits by Chinese nationals.
Flights are offered to China by American, United, and Delta Airlines.
Major American carriers are represented by the trade association Airlines for America, which declined to comment.
