On Wednesday, Alejandro Mayorkas, the homeland security secretary, welcomed Agudas Yisrael’s representatives.
Mayorkas was commended during the event by Abba Cohen, the Agudah’s Washington Director and Vice President for Government Affairs, for his concern and ties to the Jewish community.
Cohen stated, “I and other Jewish leaders received personal phone calls from Secretary Mayorkas and other officials in the White House expressing their worry, grief, and solidarity a few minutes after Shabbos when the synagogue in Colleyville [Texas] was taken over [by a terrorist].”
He continued, I have never personally encountered that degree of honesty, concern, and caring about the Jewish community in my 34 years in Washington.
There was a loud round of applause from the audience after that.
