According to the president of Senegal, a bus accident in the country’s center resulted in at least 40 fatalities and several injuries.

According to President Macky Sall in a tweet, the incident occurred in the Kaffrine region’s Gnivy village at around 3:30 in the morning.

“The horrific road accident today in Gniby, resulting in 40 fatalities and numerous critical injuries, truly saddens me. I send my sincere condolences to the victims’ families and hope the injured have a quick recovery, added Sall.

In addition to saying he would hold an inter-ministerial group to consider improving road safety, he declared three days of mourning beginning on Monday.

According to public prosecutor Cheikh Dieng, a public bus punctured a tire and drove over the road, crashing into another bus traveling in the other direction. According to him, at least 78 individuals have been hurt, some of them critically.

Social media images from the incident show the damaged buses colliding with one another and a path of debris along the route.

According to locals, poor roads, subpar automobiles, and drivers who disregard the law are to blame for the frequent motor vehicle accidents in West Africa.

At least 25 passengers died in a tragedy involving two buses in 2017.

For the yearly Muslim pilgrimage, many of those people made their way to the central town of Touba.
