Thousands of plastic pots were burned in a large fire that started early on Thursday at a nursery in central Florida, sending flames and plumes of heavy, black smoke into the air.
In the early hours, the fire started. Police told news organizations at Nursery Supplies Inc. in Kissimmee, a city in central Florida just south of Orlando.
Osceola County and neighboring Orange County hazmat teams kept an eye on the area’s air quality.
There hasn’t been a call for any local residences or businesses to evacuate. Pallets holding the two-gallon plastic plant pots, some stacked as high as 10 feet (3 meters), caught fire, covering over 2 acres (0.81 hectares). Firefighters attempted to preserve the nursery retail outlet’s pallets, which were outside.
The issue is being caused by hundreds of those pallets, according to Deputy Chief John Haskett of Osceola County Fire Rescue.
Television stations in Orlando captured video of flames and soaring plumes of dense, black smoke.
Haskett declared, “We’ve delayed the advance of that fire.” Yet it has presented us with numerous difficulties because of the space it uses and the product’s nature.
Although the source of the fire wasn’t immediately known, Haskett indicated that once it was out, an inquiry would begin.
