According to the foreign ministry of Jordan on Sunday, a Jordanian lawmaker was detained by Israel on suspicion of smuggling guns and gold into the West Bank.
The lawmaker, identified as Imad Al-Adwan, is alleged to have been captured crossing the border into the Israeli-occupied West Bank, according to the ministry’s spokeswoman, Sinan Majali, who added that Jordanian officials are monitoring the matter “to find out the merits of the situation and address it as soon as possible.”
The foreign ministry of Israel declined to respond.
The incident could potentially exacerbate Jordan’s strained relations with its neighbor Israel.
Before Israel captured the territories in the 1967 Middle East conflict, Jordan was in charge of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
However, the kingdom continues to charge the Al-Aqsa Mosque and other Muslim sacred sites in the Old City.
