After thirty years on the run, Italy’s most wanted man, convicted Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, was finally apprehended on Monday in a private clinic in Palermo, Sicily, according to Italian paramilitary police.

According to Carabinieri Gen. Pasquale Angelosanto, commander of the police force’s special operations unit, Messina Denaro was apprehended at the clinic where he received treatment for an unidentified medical issue.

On a gloomy morning, two Carabinieri officers led him to a waiting black van as they escorted him down the front steps of the fancy clinic, one gripping his arm.

Messina Denaro was dressed in his signature tinted glasses, a white and brown skull cap, and a brown leather jacket with shearling trim.

He had a wan appearance and was looking directly ahead. Following his arrest, he was escorted by police to a hidden location, according to Italian state television.

He was a young man when he fled, now 60. Even on the run, Messina Denaro was regarded as the leading Cosa Nostra official in Sicily.

He established a base of operations in the western Sicilian port city of Trapani.

Multiple life sentences are expected for Messina Denaro, who was found guilty of numerous murders after being prosecuted in absentia.

He will likely go to prison for the 1992 bombs in Sicily that killed Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone, two prominent anti-Mafia prosecutors, and Falcone’s wife and numerous of their bodyguards.

The murder of a Mafia turncoat’s young son, who was kidnapped and strangled before his body was disintegrated in an acid vat, was one of the gruesome acts for which he was found guilty.

Salvatore “Toto” Riina, a convicted “boss of bosses,” was apprehended on January 15, 1993, in a Palermo flat after spending 23 years on the run.

This arrest happened 30 years and a day later. In the summer of that same year, Messina Denaro fled into hiding because of the murders of Falcone and Borsellino.

According to Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, the arrest of Messina Denaro is a “huge success of the state, which demonstrates that it doesn’t capitulate in the face of the Mafia.”

Bernardo Provenzano, the Mafia boss in Italy who established the record for the most extended period on the run, was apprehended in a farmhouse close to Corleone, Sicily, in 2006 after 38 years on the run.

Once Provenzano was in the custody of the police, the search for Messina Denaro intensified. However, despite multiple reports of the mob boss being seen, he managed to avoid capture until Monday.
