Vandals from the Palestinian Arab community broke into Joseph’s Tomb in Shechem on Monday night, breaking the ner tamid there and in the shed that it was enclosed in and turning off the electricity.
The vandals reportedly targeted the Israeli military operation in Jenin in protest. Reports state that the rest of the tomb is still in good condition.
The Palestinian Authority, which is in charge of overseeing the tomb’s maintenance and security, is in charge of controlling it.
In the twenty years since the IDF handed control to the PA, the site has been severely vandalized a number of times.
Since the vandalism was reported, Yossi Dagan, the president of the Samaria Regional Council, has been in touch with Col. Shimon Siso, the commander of the Samaria Brigade.
In disbelief, Dagan remarked, “Once again we discover that only the State of Israel and the IDF can protect Joseph’s Tomb, one of the holy places for the people of Israel.
“One of the State of Israel’s shameful and reckless deeds was the abandoning of Joseph’s Tomb by Ehud Barak 23 years ago.
It’s time to fix it. The terrorist Palestinian Authority won’t be in charge of protecting Israel’s sacred sites, he stressed.
