On Sunday afternoon, a single-engine plane heading toward a local airport crashed in a Long Island suburb.
Officials said it was unclear how many passengers were on board or whether there were any injuries or fatalities.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Piper PA 28 crashed around 3 p.m. while approaching Republic Airport in Farmingdale.
Around 20 miles (32 km) east of New York City sits the airport.
According to Suffolk County Police, the accident forced them to close a nearby road. Pictures of homes on a suburban street with black smoke rising over them were shared on social media.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will look into the collision.
