Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert shocked his interviewer with a controversial statement that Israel is “going into civil war now” in an interview with Britain’s Channel 4.
When challenged by the interviewer, Olmert later corrected himself, saying that Israelis would be acting with “civil disobedience.” Olmert said that the civil disobedience would have “all the possible ramifications for the stability of the state and the ability of the government to perform” and that a large portion of the Israeli population perceives the government as illegitimate as it “threatens the foundations of Israeli democracy.
Olmert spoke of the “serious threat” that has “never happened before.”
The former prime minister has made other recent aggressive statements.
Additionally, he urged US Vice President Joe Biden to reevaluate his ties to Israel and urged foreign leaders to avoid Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a result of the Israeli laws enacting judicial changes.
Olmert mentioned the “next stage” in his remarks from February, saying that it “will be war, and war is not waged by speeches but rather by hand-to-hand fighting.”
“We are going into a civil war now.”
