During the evening rush hour on Monday, a lone attacker stabbed three people before being apprehended by police at a metro station beneath the offices of the European Union in Brussels, according to officials.
One of the three injured was rushed to the hospital in serious condition, according to a police official who asked not to be named because the investigation was continuing. The representative gave no additional information.
Social media images showed police at the Schuman station pointing their rifles at a man, while others showed a man receiving first aid outside the station. The station lies beneath the executive Commission of the EU’s main office.
After a church official in southern Spain was killed last week by an attacker brandishing a machete, the episode in Brussels assumed a special significance.
Two teens were stabbed to death on a train in northern Germany, and five other passengers were hurt.
The area was promptly cordoned off during the evening rush hour incident, according to AP reporters who were on the scene in Brussels on Monday.
The subway station had a brief panic until order was restored, according to significant networks like RTL and VRT.
Federal police did not immediately return calls about the event.
According to the subway system, there was a “police intervention” that caused the main line via Schuman to be suspended.
