In a radio appearance on Monday, Wisconsin’s Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson played down the U.S. Capitol siege of 6th January and called out Democrats for their hypocrisy. While speaking of the riots, Johnson quipped “didn’t seem like an armed insurrection to me.”

In a radio interview featured on WISN-AM in Milwaukee, Johnson, who voted Saturday to acquit former President Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial, said that Trump’s attorneys “eviscerated” legal arguments made by Democrats seeking to convict Trump for instigating the insurrection. On Saturday, the Senate acquitted Trump of a charge of “incitement of insurrection.”

He condemned the loss of lives and injuries that resulted due to the violence but went on to say that the siege wasn’t an armed insurrection. Johnson claimed, “When you hear the word ‘armed,’ don’t you think of firearms? Here are the questions I would have liked to ask — how many firearms were confiscated? How many shots were fired? I’m only aware of one, and I’ll defend that law enforcement officer for taking that shot. It was a tragedy, but I think there was only one. If that was a planned armed insurrection, man, you had really a bunch of idiots.”

Speaking of the events that took place during the siege, as was shown in multiple videos played during the impeachment trial, Johnson said, “When you hear the word ‘armed,’ don’t you think of firearms? Here are the questions I would have liked to ask — how many firearms were confiscated? How many shots were fired? I’m only aware of one, and I’ll defend that law enforcement officer for taking that shot. It was a tragedy, but I think there was only one. If that was a planned armed insurrection, man, you had really a bunch of idiots.”

He added, “We know who is talking to us and saying how important police officials are when their side is the one that’s been saying defund the police. So you’re sitting in that trial, you’re listening to all this and you understand it’s just dripping with hypocrisy.”

Johnson has always maintained his position in supporting former President Donald Trump, and is up for re-election in 2022.
