Tens of thousands of Breslover chassidim are in Uman ringing in Rosh Hashana and the year 5784 at the Kever of Rebbe Nachman while a 1.5-year-old conflict continues to wreak havoc across Ukraine.
This year’s roadblocks to getting to Uman were historic, but the devoted Chassidim would not let them stop them from celebrating Rosh Hashana in the location where they felt most close to Hashem and their spiritual leader.
The city of Uman is bustling with activity, and there are several Batei Medrashim that are filled with the sound of Torah and Tefillah, as in previous years.
At any given time, hundreds of people can be seen davening at the Kever of the Rebbe, and many more are seated and studying—alone, with a chavrusah, or with their kids.
They mostly traveled via Hungary, Poland, and Moldova, remaining steadfast in their belief in Hashem and their Emunas Chachamim that they might travel freely.
Since the start of the conflict, Rosh Hashana in Uman has been rather subdued; a nighttime curfew from 12 a.m. to 4 p.m. is in effect, and there isn’t nearly as much dancing and singing as there used to be.
The regular order of Rosh Hashana festivities is continuing with all of its force, and the Chassidim who are participating are grateful to be there; thus, the ruchniyus has not suffered.
