Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, declared on Thursday that his nation had discovered Russian secret service plots to destroy Moldova.
Zelenskyy claimed he recently notified Moldovan President Maia Sandu about the alleged plot when speaking to European Union authorities in Brussels.
Through a translator, Zelenskyy stated, “I have told her that we had detected the Russian intelligence’s plan to destroy Moldova.
“Who, when, and how” the plan would “destroy the democracy of Moldova and impose authority over Moldova,” according to Zelenskyy, was revealed in the documents.
According to Zelenskyy, the strategy was strikingly similar to Russia’s strategy to annex Ukraine. He continued by saying he was unaware of whether Moscow ultimately gave the command to carry out the plan.
Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, claimed last week that the West was considering making Moldova “another Ukraine” and that it had supported the pro-Western Sandu’s election in 2020 because she was eager to join NATO, merge Moldova with Romania and “practically is ready for anything.”
Moldova’s national intelligence service warned in December that Russia would start a new attack this year to open a land route via southern Ukraine to the Moscow-supported separatist province of Transnistria in Moldova.
Despite secession following a civil war in 1992, most nations do not recognize Transnistria.
It stretches for around 400 kilometers (250 miles) from the Dniester River’s eastern bank to the Ukrainian border. Supposedly acting as “peacekeepers,” Russia has roughly 1,500 troops in the separatist territory.
